For entry into the People’s Republic of China, it is necessary to apply for a visa well in advance of your trip. You must file your application in either the country of your citizenship or your country of permanent residency.
Layovers of up to 24 hours do not require a visa. However, it is not possible to leave the airport without a valid visa. Austrian citizens can travel to and within Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan for up to 3 months without a visa, using business or pleasure travel as the purpose of their visit.
The validity period of a visa is not dependent on the amount of permitted entries. The permitted duration of stay for a visa to China is predetermined and starts from the day of entry. Required documents for visa applications can be submitted no earlier than 50 days prior to the intended day of arrival in China.
